Access for Disabled Visitors

    The road to St Mary’s has double yellow lines and is really suitable only for drop-offs, as access is needed to the courts and the Military Museum.

    There is accessible parking for blue badge holders around the city centre, with more information available via this downloadable PDF: chester-city-centre-accessible-parking

    The closest available accessible parking is on-street outside the Grosvenor Museum, Grosvenor Street, CH1 2DD.

    There are time limited bays on Weaver Street, CH1 2BQ. Registered Blue Badge holders can stay in designated time limited bays for free for an unlimited time unless the signage advises otherwise.

    Castle Square is the closest car park (in front of Crown Court).
    It is available after 3pm on weekdays (free) and all day at weekends for £5.

      to Entrance Gate

      There are cobbles leading up to the St Mary’s entrance gate:

      There is a steep, ramped, paved route to the entrance. This surface is uneven with a gradient of between 1 in 6 to 1 in 8. It is advisable that disabled people have assistance when navigating the slope although it is manageable for active wheelchair users able to balance on the rear wheels.

    There is a steep short ramp up a step into the doorway negotiating an upstand of circa 9cm:

    A single door is open, but the double doors can be opened on request to accommodate larger mobility aids (we suggest contacting event organiser in advance to make them aware of this request). There are glass, automatic double doors inside the entrance lobby.

    There is short pile, industrial carpeting to the main floor.

    There are two stone steps to a wooden floor at the altar area (generally used by performers).

      Access

      The accessible toilet is through the small kitchen, at the back right of the space when facing the stage.

      There is vinyl flooring in kitchen and toilet areas.

      Interior Layout

      The toilet is a standard accessible toilet with Right Hand Transfer. There are grab rails, an emergency alarm, and sanitary bins available. The space is suitable for walking aids and standard wheelchairs but not larger mobility equipment as there is no ceiling hoist and floor space is minimal.
